Using criteria such as economic power, financial clout, quality of life and competitiveness, Toronto emerged as one of the top ten cities. The Toronto Region, renowned for its strong financial institutions and stable financial services sector, is not only Canada’s business and financial capital, but it’s becoming known globally as a sound location to invest and a safe place to do business.

Mississauga

This year, the largest mixed-use development in Canadian history was announced for Mississauga, as the city is in the midst of building a revolutionary downtown core.

The area will be transformed into a vibrant and walkable community, including residential and office buildings, a transit hub connected to the Hurontario LRT, community buildings, parks, and green space. The development is set to redefine downtown Mississauga for generations to come and entice investors to a region where business, life and leisure can converge.

Brampton

Canada’s space industry is about to enjoy a relaunch as a Brampton company is helping NASA and the Canadian Space Agency in a big way.

MDA has been awarded two contracts from the Canadian Space Industry to help form Canadarm3. MDA is also credited with developing the first-ever Canadarm (a shuttle remote manipulator system) that flew on over 90 shuttle missions, and Canadarm2 and Dextre, which have been in operation on the International Space Station for more than 18 years.

Halton Region (Oakville)

Halton Region’s Sheridan College was named the 2019 top international animation school in the world.

Heralded as the Harvard of Animation, Sheridan College has established its position at the forefront of teaching art in motion. Graduates of Sheridan’s animation program have gone on to work with globally renowned studios, including Disney, Pixar and Guru. Most recently, Sheridan alumna Domee Shi was awarded the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for her directorial debut, Bao, at the 91st Academy Awards.

Durham Region (Oshawa)

Durham College announced the launch of the Centre for Cybersecurity Innovation – the college’s fourth applied research centre.

It will provide applied research in cybersecurity, micro-credentials in industry-accredited programs, a cybersecurity graduate program and events held in collaboration with corporate partners. The Toronto Region has established itself as a hub for cybersecurity innovation and talent. Investments such as this attract businesses seeking to take full advantage of the opportunities, and tackle the serious challenges, of cybersecurity.

York Region (Vaughan)

Canada’s first smart hospital, the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, is set to open in 2020.

It will provide a state-of-the-art emergency department, modern surgical services, advanced diagnostic imaging, ambulatory clinics and intensive care beds. As a major innovator in the region’s life sciences industry, Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will be the first hospital in Canada to feature fully integrated ‘smart’ technology systems and medical devices that can speak directly to one another to maximize information exchange. These investments strengthen our world renowned commitment to continued innovations in healthcare and life sciences.
